On January 15, 2010, the Department of Defense complied with a court order and published a list of Captives held in the Bagram Theater Internment Facility that included the name Fazel Karim.[1][2][3]
There were 645 names on the list, which was dated September 22, 2009, and was heavily redacted.[1][2]
According to historian Andy Worthington, author of the The Guantanamo Files, an individual named "Fazal Karim" was reported to have played a role in the kidnap and murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl.[3] According to Worthington, he was reported to have been in Pakistani custody in 2003. Former President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf describe him as a "militant activist" in his autobiography. According to Worthington, he was reported to have provided information that helped lead to the capture of 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.[4][5]
He was reported to be a member of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.[6]
